OMFG

I just checked the tube types in the Austrovox.
Poweramp: 4x EL34
You can get one for about 10 to 16 bucks at the tube-town online store depending on the manufacturer. Yay!
Preamp: 1x ECC83 -> less then 10 bucks at tube-town. Again: Yay!
2x ECC808 -> One matched pair for about 100 to150€ at ebay. OH MY FUCKING GOD!

Are ECC808 made out of pure gold? I heard that you can use ECC83 instead of the ECC808 with a little pin changing and soldering action. But I dont know if I want to do this... They sound different...

Some idiots are offering used EC808 for 40€. Who the fuck buys used tubes?

  4. The tubes i use at the moment are Philips Miniwatt

    Problem is that there is a reason why one pair costs 100 and one of another manufacturer costs 20...there is also a big difference between the rebuilds and the real vintage tubes - all the rebuilds don't sound that good as they originals used to because they changed some steps in the way they are manufactured so to cut it short - the expensive vintage Tubes just sound better and yes, it is not just some highend hipster shit . i would say 9 out of 10 people can hear the difference after 30 seconds....don't know how much difference you can hear when you use them in a guitar/bass-amp though

  5. Yes there is a difference in sound. But the question is if the difference is worth it. I think its also a matter of taste. I'm sure a lot of people favor the "warn" vintage sound that only some NOS tubes produce. I'm also sure that a lot of people favor the crystal clear sound that newer tubes produce. By the way there are some "new" tubes that sound better than their "original". But they arent cheap either... I dont know if thats the case for ecc 83.

    Especially with tubes there is also a lot of bullshitting around. For instance it is totally absurd to buy matched tubes if your amp has bias pots for every tube. Mine for example does not have bias pots but its a piece of cake to add them...
